IFTA FUEL TAXES or REGISTRATION

Once you have registered with IFTA you must then complete the correct IFTA forms and file them in April, July, October, and again in January. Where does an Owner Operator make their money? On the road hauling loads, not completing paperwork. We can help ensure your IFTA filings are accurate and eliminate further problems that could occur.

MC AUTHORITY/MOTOR CARRIER AUTHORITY

If your truck, or tractor-trailer is plated for 10,000lbs, or more, and you're being paid to haul loads, you will need to obtain Motor Carrier Authority with the FMCSA.

We can take care of the entire process, and help you on your way to becoming an owner–operator. Our rates are more than affordable, and include everything you will need to get your own MC Authority.

Don't be misled by companies claiming 72 hour MC Authority!

The FMCSA requires a 21–day processing period for all applicants.

DOT Numbers

Anyone operating a commercially plated vehicle at 10,000++ lbs., must register with the US DOT.

Anyone operating a farm-plated vehicle that crosses state lines must register with the US DOT.

If you are unsure if you need to register, feel free to call us. We would be glad to assist you in determining your registration requirements.

BROKER AUTHORITY

Any person or company dispatching loads to others, utilizing for-hire carriers, must register with the FMCSA for Broker Authority.

Broker Authority does not assume the responsibility for the cargo and usually does not take possession of the cargo.

IRS HEAVY HIGHWAY USE TAX – TAX FORM 2290

If you have a truck or tractor that is plated at 55,000lbs. or more, you need to file the IRS Form 2290. The tax year for this filing begins July 1st of each year, and the filing deadline for this tax is Aug. 31st each year. You are required to pay this tax within 30 days of plating a new truck or tractor anytime during the year and the tax is pro-rated on a monthly basis.

Did you know if you trade trucks you can transfer your 2290 tax to your new truck?

Did you know if you run less than 5,000 miles in a tax year you are exempt from paying the highway use tax? You are however required to file an exempt filing.

If you have never filed this form before, you will need to obtain an EIN#/ Employer Identification Number, sometimes called a Federal ID#, before you can file the Form 2290.

OOPS always hand delivers these forms to the IRS. So we can ensure you an accurate and timely tax filing. Normally this form can be filed and returned to you within 24 hours!

STATE PERMITS/STATE AUTHORITY

There are four states requiring an additional permit to haul loads for-hire through their state. These permits are in addition to the MC Authority.

The KYU# or Kentucky Weight Distance Tax number is one of the permits. If you haul for hire through the state of Kentucky, and are commercially plated for more than 60,000lbs, you will need to register for a KYU# with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Once you have a KYU#, if you add additional trucks or trade trucks, you will need to register the new vehicles with Kentucky. The Kentucky Weight Distance Tax does require you to do quarterly mileage filings to maintain the permit.

We can normally obtain KYU#’s in as little as 24 hours!

The NYHUT permit or New York Highway Use Tax number is one of these additional permits. If you travel through the state of New York, and are commercially plated for more than 18,000lbs., you will need to register with the NY department of Taxation and Finance. Anytime you add additional trucks or trade trucks you must obtain a new permit before entering New York. The New York Highway Use Tax does require you to do quarterly filings to maintain the permit.

The Oregon Weight Receipt permit is an additional permit. If you travel through the State of Oregon, and are commercially plated for more than 26,000lbs., you will need to register with the Oregon Department of Transportation for an OR weight receipt permit. This permit will make it easier to pass through scales when entering and exiting the state of Oregon. This permit does require you to show proof of insurance and the posting of a surety bond. This permit also requires monthly mileages report filings that must be completed. This permit also requires a yearly renewal.

The State of Oregon also offers the owner-operator the availability of paying the mileage tax at the port of entry for passage through the state; this option exempts you from the weight receipt permit. We only recommend this option unless you have very limited travel in Oregon.

The NM MTD# or New Mexico Weight Distance permit is also one of the additional permits. If you travel through the state of New Mexico, and are commercially plated for more than 26,000 lbs., you will need to register with the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department for a Weight Distance Tax Identification Permit.
